Work…does it have to be laborious?

The word “work” often has a negative connotation when one is thinking about something they have to do or a job they need to go to. It may be prefaced with “ugh” or some other deliberation.

Actually, our “work” is something that is natural to us – glorifying and expressing God! There isn’t any labor or heaviness associated with this. In fact, expressing God’s qualities – joy, compassion, creativity, grace, love, wisdom – actually gives us energy! I’m sure we’ve all experienced instances of this whether you’re an artist, business person or stay-at-home parent; it’s when you get that moment of clarity – a new insight or solution to a problem – and a burst of energy comes with it.

Expressing God, consciously embodying spiritual qualities in thought and acting on them throughout the day, gives us renewal and clarity.

So let’s not think of work as anything but expressing and glorifying God. This comes so naturally and easily to us. It will make our day invigorated with energy and hope and we will come across many opportunities to give to others.

Mary Baker Eddy writes, “Constant toil, deprivations, exposures, and all untoward conditions, if without sin, can be experienced with out suffering. Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself.”

“You say, ‘Toil fatigues me.’ But what is this me? Is it muscle or mind? Which is tired and so speaks? Without mind, could the muscles be tired?…You do not say a wheel is fatigued; and yet the body is as material as the wheel. If it were not for what the human mind says of the body, the body, like the inanimate wheel, would never be weary. The consciousness of Truth rests us more than hours of repose in unconsciousness.”

Christ Jesus says,

“Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!” Luke 12:27-28 NIV

It is worry and fretting which make us tired. Fearing a mentally projected outcome makes a project/job daunting.

However, we rest on God’s law of harmony. Harmony is a natural activity; it fills all space and governs all things regardless of background, age, gender, etc. We don’t have to make harmony go into effect. It always is. The law of harmony enforces itself.

So whether you are working on a project or some other task, you can go forward knowing that you already have everything you need. God’s spiritual qualities that you express are adequate for any situation you will find yourself in.

“…those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.”  Isaiah 40:31 NKJV

Independence

This past week I was working on being more independent. No one wants to feel like they are dependent on anything. We all want to feel liberated, confident and free!

True independence actually comes from our total dependence on God, divine Love. Divine Love, God, is the source of all happiness, health, supply, purpose, vibrancy, companionship, order, creativity, etc.  And these come into our experience when we lean on Him/Her, when we go right to the Source.

If I want to feel happiness, I know that God, divine Love, is supplying me with infinite happiness this moment. God is providing me the opportunities to express this happiness and share it with others. Happiness is a quality of God so it is inherent in us! We were made to be happy 🙂

If I want to feel more health, activity or strength, I know that God is the source of all energy and is giving me boundless strength right now! God did not create or send sickness to any of us. It is our divine right to dispute  sickness at all times! And our thoughts (the ones that come from God) protect us. Good thoughts are the best immune system you have!

If we want to feel more fulfillment in our lives, we can rejoice that we are the satisfied ideas of God, divine Love. God saw all that She made and it was very good! That sounds pretty satisfied to me.
Be watchful of any unconscious pull towards materialism or thinking that matter can make us happy. Rejoice in the simplicity, beauty and childlikeness around you right now! Sometimes when I look around my house and feel that I want “more” I remember that a baby, child or pet doesn’t care what you have. They feel and value the love, joy and comfort that is around them. We can be that child, too, and feel so satisfied with the positive, abundant qualities that are with us all the time.

Go for a walk; look for something “new” that you’ve never noticed before. I did that on a walk home with my dogs when I was feeling kind of bored with our route. Every few steps I strived to notice something new that I hadn’t consciously appreciated before. And now I see light, joy and comfort expressed all around me on this route. You may even want to stop and explore a new area that looks appealing. It’s important to keep exploring new things – expand & grow. Don’t contract or confine your viewpoint and experience. Grow! 🙂

So as we think about Independence Day, here in America, we can rejoice in knowing our complete freedom, our independence, comes from all the good that God, divine Love, is supplying us each moment. And we can be so grateful that the Truth does indeed make us free!

 

 

The Earth & sustainability

I’ve been thinking a lot about sustainability.

Part of the metaphysical definition for Earth in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures says:

“To material sense, earth is matter; to spiritual sense, it is a compound idea.”

From this spiritual sense perspective, Earth is an expression of Spirit and Life.  It is made up of God’s diversity and creativity, and every aspect of Earth, as an idea, is always perfect, harmonious and eternal.

Because the Earth is God’s self-expression, we can have an enlarged appreciation for the diversity, beauty and harmony of Earth. From trees we learn of strength and stability; from flowers we learn of joy and playfulness; from the sun we learn of warmth, comfort and energy.

All of the glories of the Earth are a way for us to know more about the perfection, wonder and infinite nature of the Creator.

So, in being a better steward and citizen of the Earth our motives can be love and appreciation for God’s spiritual Earth. We can be grateful that we can perceive the infinite nature of Life in a way that is tangible and appreciable to the human consciousness, and always see that these manifestations of life have their source in Spirit, eternal Life.

I’m enjoying taking actions to support those individuals and businesses which have these values of appreciation in mind when doing their business. Today, it can be so easy for businesses to get mesmerized into focusing completely on making more money; or as an individual we may focus on cutting corners or finding things cheaply regardless of where they came from.

But what an invitation to see that as stewards of the Earth, and children of God, the qualities of integrity, brotherly love, patience and sustainability are part of who we are.

During these tough economic times, we are called to understand that our supply comes 100% from God, good, and therefore doesn’t depend on us cutting corners, pillaging valuable resources, or destroying beneficial relationships.

Christ Jesus said:

“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’… For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness [or right thinking], and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6, NKJV)

“If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?…If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11 NKJV)

When Jesus’ students told him to send the crowds home because they had been listening to Jesus’ teachings all day and were hungry, Jesus told them they didn’t have to leave. They would be fed by staying in the Christ-light. In other words, we never have to leave the Holy Spirit in order to find food and money. He fed the crowds right there, out of his abundance, so they never had to leave Christ. God says we don’t have to leave Him (His qualities of integrity, virtue, honesty, compassion, brotherly love, justice) in order to make money. What a protection to us!

Jesus responded to temptation by saying: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4 NKJV) In other words, man does not live by matter but by every impulsion, characteristic and direction of Spirit.

As you are governed by these spiritual character traits of God, you are naturally governed in harmony with all of God’s creation. And everyone, including the Earth, reaps the blessings of your obedience.
