Prayer for Miners

I really appreciate the point made in the article “Trapped Miners Impress NASA Team” by the Christian Science Monitor about the “remarkable example of human resilience in the face of potential tragedy”.  And the ways in which humanity unites together in these instances to help one another.

Where does this strength and resilience come from?  Spirit.  It is Spirit (another name for God) that moves us, calms us, cares for us, and gives us new and useful ideas.  God is working in our thought, providing us with ideas, comfort, and these translate into daily supplies.  One of my favorite passages is a beautiful explanation of angels given by Mary Baker Eddy, a spiritual leader and teacher (and the discoverer and founder of the Monitor and Christian Science).

It goes in part like this:

“God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies. Never ask for tomorrow: it is enough that divine Love is an ever-present help; and if you wait, never doubting, you will have all you need every moment. What a glorious inheritance is given to us through the understanding of omnipresent Love! More we cannot ask: more we do not want: more we cannot have. This sweet assurance is the “Peace, be still” to all human fears, to suffering of every sort.”  (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 307)

Mind (also another name for God) is being expressed in the activities, usefulness, and spiritual ideas the miners are doing and imparting.  Mind is never separated from It’s creation for a moment.  Each idea (man) is fulfilling it’s task and purpose.  The article points out that valuable work is important to each of us.  We all want to be valued and useful, and we are!  I love how someone has taken on the task of being a spiritual leader.  This small community of people is seeing the importance of God, realizing the presence of God, and of prayer (communing with God) in our lives.  They are obviously feeling a beneficial effect from their prayer, from reaching out to God, or that role wouldn’t be necessary.  Scientific studies are starting to lean more to the effect of our thought and prayer on the body and in our life.  And these people are feeling the effect and love of everyone’s prayer around the world.

There is one point in the article that I specifically want to address.  The article says there could be continued challenges and hardship for these miners and their families after they are rescued because of all they have been through.  But this does not have to be true.  God is divine Love.  And this Love is so beautiful, pure and perfect.  It doesn’t contain any harsh side effects or punishment and certainly doesn’t bestow these on His/Her creation.  The Bible says, “For in him we live, and move, and have our being;” (Acts 17:28).  So these children of God have never been separated from and never are separated from God’s love.  No amount of human theories and hypotheses can change the perfect effects and law of God on our lives.  Spirit and It’s creation can never change from it’s perfect state. We have divine authority to deny anything unlike God, good.  We are all perfect, innocent, and free, and our innocence has never been touched because it is our spiritual state, which is upheld by Spirit, divine Love.

In another beautiful passage, King David writes:

“Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.” (Psalms 139:8)

So as we continue to support our fellow-man in prayer, let’s know they are safe in God’s love right now and have never been apart from that Love and never will be.  They cannot endure anything unlike that Love.

Man is not the creator.

When we think man is a creator, we think that man is responsible for creating health; he or she must have perfect genetics to make up the perfect child.  Man has to maintain and sustain himself through a job, money, right connections, exercise, healthy eating, and at the same time try to fulfill his own hopes and dreams.

This is a lot of stress on man.  And it has side-effects such as stubbornness, human will, manipulation, deceit, as well as selfishness, competition, and fear.

Fortunately, this picture is not accurate.

Spirit, God created man, perfect in His own image and likeness.  Man has all the qualities and characteristics to do and achieve that which he needs.  They are including in his being.  All of his hopes and aspirations are given to him by God and therefore fulfilled and satisfied through Him.  God blesses his children with beautiful relationships that are loving, kind, and caring.  God supplies all of man’s needs and wants because man’s purpose is to glorify and express God (Life, Truth, Love).  Man’s sufficiency comes from God.

“Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;”[i]

All beauty, fruitfulness and plenty come from God and are the attributes of His government.  There is no lack or limitation to the infinite, supreme, all good, God.

“And the Lord shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers to give thee.”[ii]

When we are conscious of this Truth, we are governed by divine Mind.  We hear God’s direction and are one with God’s thoughts, which are always good, lovely, assuring angel messages.  We are governed obediently, following and yielding to the divine will, which includes and blesses all with infinite intelligence.

“Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.”[iii]

So we can be reassured and rest in God’s love.  We can yield to this spiritual sense of things, which is telling us this truth each moment, uplifting and blessing us.

And we can make more space for God, Spirit, in our lives.  God, good, is already governing and controlling things.  Our duty is to be conscious and aware of this.  This takes daily prayer to quiet the limited human sense of things for the spiritual and true sense of what God sees and knows.  As we yield to this we will be governed by divine Mind and we will experience the fruits of this government in our lives.  This includes more consistent health, a greater sense of energy and purpose, better family relationships, a more stable structure, and abundant supply that comes with ease.

Spirit, which is infinite intelligence, governs all things perfectly and It’s reign is here and now.  Let’s yield to this in our thought and feel the blessings that are included for all mankind.

Person versus Principle

Today I’ve been working (mentally) on seeing and knowing that there is only one Person!  In fact the limitation of any school of thought or religion comes from too great of a sense of person instead of Principle.  When we focus our thought on Principle, we are seeing what God is doing and knowing; we are seeing the Truth and a greater, expansive sense of Life.  Too great of a sense of person or personality separate our thought from the one God who is also the one Person.

There is one Mind, one Ego, or consciousness.  And everything is the manifestation of this one Mind.  Everything is in essence made up of God’s thoughts, God’s ideas, and what God sees and knows.

Does this mean that our being and existence is annihilated?  On the contrary, we are each the individual expression of the One Being.  God is the substance, nature, and essence of who we are.  We are essentially made up of spiritual qualities – love, joy, peace, harmony, creativity, spontaneity, life, vitality, energy, principle, honesty, integrity, and so on.  Each of us expresses Deity in a truly unique way – and this is our identity and individuality.  God’s creation or manifestation wouldn’t be complete with out each and everyone one of us.  Which is why we exist permanently and eternally in divine Mind.

That which is based on person instead of Principle is erroneous.  For instance to believe that Jesus as a person is our personal savior is limiting.  But to realize that his teachings are what saves us – what destroys evil and sin – is what enables us to “go and do likewise”[i] as he instructed.

“Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.”[ii] Here again, Jesus is pointing us to God; he was always trying to get us to look to God, follow God, and be obedient to God.  If we worship a person, other than the one Person or Principle, which is God, this is idolatry.  Jesus was teaching and revealing a Principle.  And when we look to that Principle we get the same results he did.

Stephen, Philip, and Paul all did the same.  They didn’t know Jesus personally, they weren’t taught by him personally, but that didn’t change the effect of his teachings because his teachings were based on a Principle.  They preached the “good news” and healed many that were sick or diseased.

Does Principle change?  Has it disappeared and gone away?  No.  Just as the principle of math doesn’t ever go anywhere, so divine Principle is still here, present, and applicable.  As we look to Principle, we see more of what God is doing, seeing, and knowing.  And anything that comes to our thought as another person other than God, the one Person, is false and stems from evil or what some call the “devil” which doesn’t have substance or reality.  These thoughts may come up like “she is bad” or “I feel sick” always presenting themselves as another ego.

Paul says, “For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me:”[iii]

Here Paul is denying this ego or being separate from God.  He is saying that it is the Christ – the spirit of God – that makes up his identity and individuality.  And therefore he is and can only be and do like God.

And the same is true for us.
