Watching or watching out?

Jesus said: “…I say unto all, watch.” (Mark 13:37)

I’ve often pondered the distinction between “watching” and “watching out”.

I realize that watching out keeps our focus on error – on the bad stuff – and brings with it a sense of insecurity and paranoia.

On the other hand, watching or keeping watch is a spiritual activity which means mentally staying alert and keeping our focus on God, good. Watching can also mean watching your thoughts and determine if thoughts are from God or not.

Thoughts from God always include a sense of spiritual dominion, freedom, peace & joy.

These are the good thoughts – the only thoughts we need to listen to. Imagine living in a society where everyone only listened to good thoughts? It’s an interesting thing to think about.

We tread on forces…

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a great holiday and that you are all enjoying the freshness and spiritual promise of a new year!

I often contemplate this statement when I pray:

We tread on forces. Withdraw them, and creation must collapse. Human knowledge calls them forces of matter; but divine Science declares that they belong wholly to divine Mind, are inherent in this Mind, and so restores them to their rightful home and classification.(Science and Health, p. 124)

Sometimes it seems like everything is on the verge of falling apart. I contemplate this statement to know that my home, family, and society are fully sustained by divine Spirit. Goodness is natural and normal. God made us and sustains us. He made us healthy, harmonious and good. These attributes are spiritual forces, or laws, that we can draw on and underlie our being.

God’s being is infinity, freedom, harmony, and boundless bliss (Science and Health, p. 481). And we reflect that being. We are at one with that being.

So next time that things feel shaky remember that you draw on forces of good (a real force of nature) which sustains your very being.

 

Freedom from fearful thoughts

Lately I’ve found thoughts of accident, disaster, and tragedy harassing me. I’m not generally a fearful or paranoid person, so this was unusual. The way I’ve been dealing with this is through prayer.

The Bible states:

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:8, 9 NIV)

So all I have to do is think about & focus on the things that are divine, good & true. Recognizing that these negative thoughts are not my mind is a huge help. St. Paul also says to have that mind which is in Christ. That Mind is God — the one intelligence or consciousness. God’s thoughts are pure, holy, peaceful & good. When I am governed by & listening to him, there isn’t any room for thoughts that are bad.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Founder of Christian Science, wrote:
“…keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love, that sin, disease, and death cannot enter them. It is plain that nothing can be added to the mind already full. There is no door through which evil can enter, and no space for evil to fill in a mind filled with goodness. Good thoughts are an impervious armor; clad therewith you are completely shielded from the attacks of error of every sort. And not only yourselves are safe, but all whom your thoughts rest upon are thereby benefited.”

I’m so grateful that we all have the tools at hand to find mental and physical freedom.
