Happy New Year

What are your New Year’s resolutions?

Last New Year, my family and I made a resolution to reduce our landfill waste. It took being aware of what we were throwing away and finding ways to reduce and creative ways to reuse. After just 3 weeks, we reduced our trash by 70% and we have stuck with it the entire year. Composting and recycling are a big help, and so is being mindful about what we are throwing away and looking for alternatives to plastic. Each family member has participated and developed a greater awareness of our purchasing decisions.

It’s really freeing!

Another New Year is upon us and I’m reminded of an even deeper resolution that we can carry in our hearts. It is conveyed in this quote.

Today my soul can only sing and soar. An increasing sense of God’s love, omnipresence, and omnipotence enfolds me. Each day I know Him nearer, love Him more, and humbly pray to serve Him better. –Mary Baker Eddy

Feeling more of God’s presence and love, expressing God’s qualities when we speak heart to heart, pausing and listening more deeply, and being willing to help and take the time for our neighbors will revitalize our thought and bring healing to the world.

Have a blessed, peaceful, and happy New Year!

Celebrating the Christ-spirit

I like thinking a lot about the Christ-spirit and presence that Jesus embodied. It was this Christly-power and authority that enabled him to still storms, walk through mobs unharmed, calm sickness and fear, and provide abundance in the face of lack.

This Christ-spirit and presence is still here within each of us.

It enables us to:

  • Choose love instead of anger
  • Peace instead of stress
  • Stillness instead of busyness
  • Have courage in the face of fear
  • Spiritual conviction in the face of doubt
  • Strength in moments of weakness
  • Healing in the face of disease

This Christ-presence comes to each of us when we need it. It lightens the darkness, brings healing, and shows us God’s gracious love for us.

Welcome the Christ-spirit into your consciousness this Christmas and everyday!

I love to observe Christmas in quietude, humility, benevolence, charity, letting good will towards man, eloquent silence, prayer, and praise express my conception of Truth’s appearing. (Mary Baker Eddy, What Christmas Means To Me)

Magnify the good

O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. Psalms 34:3

I love going to chapel on Monday morning at my son’s school. During chapel there is an opportunity for teachers and students to “magnify the good” by acknowledging something helpful that another student or teacher did. Students and teachers do a little cheer for that person.

It shows me the value of magnifying the good we see around us, which allows it to become bigger in our thinking.

After a period of feeling fear and doubt, I decided to give gratitude more diligently as a way to “magnify the good”. I have found that a gratitude app really helps me stay on top of this practice. Taking moments to fill my thought with an acknowledgement of good breaks the spell of lack, want, or depression. It gives a keen sense of God’s love, beauty, and goodness.

Gratitude enables us to feel peaceful and joyful! Gratitude has a healing effect.

So magnify the good! Notice the good around you, even the small things. Being aware of God’s presence can fill your consciousness with courage, hope, freedom, and possibilities.

A grateful heart a garden is,
Where there is always room
For every lovely, Godlike grace
To come to perfect bloom….
A grateful heart a temple is,
A shrine so pure and white,
Where angels of His presence keep
Calm watch by day or night.
(Christian Science Hymn 3)
