Inspiration from Bible text

So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”… God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good.

Genesis 1:27, 28, 31 NRSV

This Bible text has new meaning for me this week. There is the literal interpretation of the text “be fruitful and multiply” meaning to procreate. But what about if we can’t procreate, if we are beyond our child-bearing years or we just don’t want children? Does the text not apply? How about if we look at the text from a spiritual interpretation?

“Be fruitful” can signify fertility, but it can also have a larger meaning. Be useful. Be effective. Be constructive. Be worthwhile. Be helpful. Be beneficial. Be rewarding. Live a life that is well-spent. God is calling us to be productive, valuable, and rewarding.

This doesn’t mean be busy bodies.

Rushing around smartly is no proof of accomplishing much.*

It’s really about acknowledging the productivity that is already part of your day. It is already established. We are just awake and responding to it.

Success in life depends upon persistent effort, upon the improvement of moments more than upon any other one thing…If one would be successful in the future, let him make the most of the present.*

This reminds me of a time when I was seeking additional employment. I was looking for more expansive ways to use my talents as well as for additional financial income for my family.

I wrote down a list of all the spiritual qualities I felt I expressed naturally. Some of these included creativity, discipline, organization, attention to detail, energy, activity, love of community, etc. You could say I was writing a spiritual resume and becoming more aware of my spiritual identity. I called a friend who lived in another state and inquired if she knew of anyone hiring within our church organization. She informed she did know of someone, and they had just brought up my name as a possibility. When she sent me the job description, it included all of the qualities I had listed on my spiritual resume. I knew it would be a perfect fit. I interviewed for the job and was able to work remotely from my home. I started just a few weeks later. This work continued to be a blessing over the next few years.

The last part of the Bible text states that God saw everything he made and it was “very good”. This “very good” text is particularly noteworthy. Good  means beneficial and useful. So, we are beneficial and useful to God, and we are beneficial and useful to the needs of society today.

Harmony is the natural order of the universe

I love exploring the idea of harmony. Harmony is a beautiful attribute of God, which we can bear witness to in all of our activities. It’s actually pretty fun. How is harmony being expressed right now? How will harmony be present today? These are great questions to ask ourselves when we want to see where our thought is dwelling.

Here is a quote that I love about harmony (although it was originally written to a group of Christian Scientists, it can be applied to everyone universally).

The real Christian Scientist is constantly accentuating harmony in word and deed, mentally and orally, perpetually repeating this diapason of heaven: “Good is my God, and my God is good. Love is my God, and my God is Love.”

Seeing harmony expressed around us is enlightening! And it has added benefits to our health. Today there are many people who recognize the power of consciousness on the body. Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science 150 years ago, described health as the “consciousness of harmony and of nothing else.” And many people today are finding physical healing, restoration of relationships and financial difficulties through a change in consciousness — through a more enlightened sense of the Infinite and the natural, beautiful laws of harmony that govern our experience.

Here is another quote that I love:

God is harmony’s selfhood.

Wow, what an idea! When we are focused on our a personal selfhood, it’s much harder to see harmony working in our lives. However, when we focus on the whole picture and perceive through a spiritual lens, we can see harmony working around us. You could even say that we perceive harmony, because we are spiritual! We are perceiving who we really are, our Maker and the natural order of existence.

Focusing on harmony’s selfhood enables us to see that we are an active component of a whole Being. Perceiving harmony is perceiving wholeness (perhaps that is why it’s linked to health).

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

What fun it is to discover more about harmony everyday. Enjoy the joyous adventure!

Step by step trusting Him

Graduating from college, moving to a new house, finding summer plans — whatever it may footsteps-1045952_960_720be, God is providing each step of the way.

Recently, my family decided it was time to embark on a new adventure. As I prayed about this upcoming change, it became evident that what we needed was simply to see the next step, follow it, and then each step of the way would be placed in front of us in just the right way.

A beautiful hymn states:

Lead Thou me on…I do not ask to see The distant scene; one step enough for me.

Whatever steps in life we take, it always begins by taking the first step. We don’t need to see beyond this (and it most cases we can’t). It can be tough to see only one step because we want to know the ‘end of the story’, so to speak. We want to see how it will all work out!

beach-972566_960_720If I could have seen in to the future, even just two years ago, I wouldn’t have known how I got there. I would have thought that I simply went from point A to point B without realizing  all the spiritual growth and wisdom gained along the way; or the patience and selflessness that was needed; and I couldn’t have known all the love and blessings that developed along the way in many friendships and precious moments with our family.

So as we face changes in life, we can trust that divine Mind, God, is leading and guiding us. This intelligent Source speaks through the “still, small voice” (1 Kings 19:12) and through spiritual intuition. As we silence the “storm” around us — the mental turmoil that desperately wants to know all the answers — we will hear and see each step placed before us at just the right time. We will hear God’s angel messages guiding us along the way.

The Bible says:

Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.

God’s light is leading you! He will not leave you in darkness.

Step by step will those who trust Him find that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

We all have the ability to hear and understand God’s will, which blesses us. As we seek to serve to God, He will guide us in the perfect way to bless and serve others on a path of love, joy, and peace.
