Reaching goals & living in the now

The past few days I’ve been thinking about goals.

 

A spiritual leader, Mary Baker Eddy, speaks of her experience this way:

 

“The discoverer of Christian Science finds the path less difficult when she has the high goal always before her thoughts, than when she counts her footsteps in endeavoring to reach it. When the destination is desirable, expectation speeds our progress.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, P. 426)

 

I’ve had trouble balancing this statement because to me focusing on reaching a goal doesn’t seem like living in the now.

 

But I just realized the two actually go hand in hand.

 

Living in the now is actually an appreciation and awareness of infinite good, Love, joy, and health that is here, right now.  It is a knowing that God is as full as He can be, and man and woman are made in His/Her image and likeness – totally spiritual, harmonious and free.

 

This fact is not going to be more true once we reach a certain goal.  We can relish the fact that we don’t have to wait for spiritual perfection.

 

For me, the high goal means the absolute spiritualization of all thought and life; infinite Spirit, Mind, Love understood and expressed; and man/woman seen as It’s image and likeness, totally eternal and spiritual.

 

Ultimately our goals are a sign and symbol of this – of our spiritual rights, heritage and freedom, and our oneness with the Source of goodness being seen and expressed.

 

Goals may keep us going on the forward path, the path of progress.   However, we can rejoice that reaching our goal only means seeing more clearly what has always been true about us and the universe.

 

So we can also celebrate, today, that the Truth is already true; that God is here and now, and we are His spiritual, perfect, eternal creation.  There will never be more supply, beauty, health, harmony, love, or freedom present than is present right now, spiritually.  We can rejoice in this and have the expectation that we will meet our goals and see this spiritual fact more clearly each day.

 

A healing I had renews confidence

I’m rejoicing because of a healing I just had.

 

I was feeling quite down and blue.  I kept hearing thoughts like, what are you doing? Are you really valuable and useful?  Why don’t you have any confidence?

 

I wrote a list about why I am valuable and useful.  Although I learned more about myself, I still couldn’t quite shake the blues.

 

I reached out to some folks for answers.  One of those people is my husband.  He boiled it down to one question.  To which the response was “because God is calling you to”.  That’s it.  No human reason, justification, personality or any other such thing.  Simply you are doing what you are doing because God is calling you to.

 

I went to the Christian Science church service this evening, still not feeling quite right.

 

I was serving as an usher so I decided I would pray for others and the church service while I waited for people to arrive.

 

Taking my mind off these challenges, and myself, helped and made me feel a lot lighter.

 

There were many good ideas shared during the service, and I enjoyed listening to them.  Occasionally an “angel message” would come to my thought “God is calling you to” as a response to my inner longing.  There were wonderful testimonies given (folks stand up and give gratitude for spiritual growth and healings), and by the conclusion of the service I was feeling happy, light and free.  I was able to chat freely with fellow church attendees.

 

So, in conclusion, the helpful ideas that came to me were these:

 

  • God is calling me to do what I am doing.
  • Therefore, it is not me doing it, I am just expressing and glorifying God.
  • I have to be good at things I do because I am expressing Him.  I have to be a good cook, good wife, good practitioner, etc because He is good and I am expressing/reflecting Him (not myself).

 

This gave me a lot more confidence and clarity, and I am going forth rejoicing!!

 

Find a mentor, or be one. Answers are always present.

I’m greatly appreciative of having mentors. In high school and college I never really had one, though I see now how that would have been soooooo helpful. I simply didn’t seek one out. The opportunity never presented itself to me and I didn’t know there was someone who could play that role.

 

Cherish every opportunity for mentoring. Value this precious resource.

 

When I took a course in Christian Science healing, I instantly had a mentor – my teacher. I felt so privileged (and still do!) because I realized it’s what I had been wanting and craving for so many years. Here was a woman who I respect and admire, I love the way she thinks and lives; she has her role as my spiritual teacher, and I have my role as her student. What a perfect working out!

 

Since then I’ve realized we can have more than one mentor, and there are a lot of different ways mentoring can come about. And we can feel free, willing and happy to seek it out. We NEVER have to feel we are doing things alone.  We NEVER have to feel that we are stuck with a question and it’s our job to come up with an answer. We always have support, someone to lean on or go to. Seek that out. Don’t let fear or uncertainty stop you.

 

God always sees us as growing, expanding, and developing higher and higher. That never has to stop. No matter what age, we can always be growing and learning and enlarging our sense of life. And we never have to do it alone.

 

Relationships and how we interact with one another (loving, uplifting, and supporting) are so valued by God. This is why we have two great commandments and not just the one – Have only one God & love your neighbor as yourself.  (The Gospel According to St. Matthew: 22)

 

I rejoice and my heart sings for having mentors I can turn to. There is an answer. God is speaking, guiding, supporting, and uplifting us. Don’t think we have to go it alone or find an answer by ourselves. It is always God’s abundance, goodness, and provision being expressed and communicated to us around the clock.  This often comes as an “angel message” in our thought, or as an idea someone shared, or even the way the idea is communicated.

 

Love our mentors and these wonderful opportunities. Cherish and nurture them, and never undervalue them.
